Three terrorists carried out an armed attack near the Israeli Consulate General in Istanbul on Tuesday before being neutralised by Turkish security forces, authorities said.
The assailants opened fire near a police checkpoint guarding the consulate compound in Istanbul’s Levent district, triggering a rapid response and a brief firefight.
One attacker was killed, while two others were wounded and captured. Two police officers were also injured during the clash.
Istanbul authorities confirmed the attackers had travelled from İzmit and were linked to a group that “exploits religion,” pointing to extremist motivations behind the assault.
Officials explicitly described the perpetrators as terrorists, while also characterising the incident as a “provocation.”
The attackers failed to breach the consulate building. No diplomatic personnel were harmed.
Security has since been tightened around diplomatic missions across Istanbul, and prosecutors have launched a full investigation into the attackers’ network and affiliations.
