Nigeria reshuffles cabinet and appoints new finance minister

In Abuja, President Bola Tinubu has carried out a limited cabinet reshuffle, signalling a cautious adjustment of his economic team.

The presidency said on Tuesday that two ministers were removed, while a junior official was promoted to oversee Nigeria’s key finance portfolio.

Taiwo Oyedele has been elevated from minister of state for finance to finance minister, taking on wider responsibility for coordinating economic policy.

He replaces Wale Edun, whose exit marks a notable leadership change at a time of economic difficulty.

Officials gave no detailed reason for the reshuffle, leaving analysts to read into the timing as fiscal pressures continue.

At the same time, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa has stepped down as minister of housing and urban development.

Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been nominated to succeed him, pending formal confirmation.

The changes appear targeted rather than sweeping, pointing to continuity as the government seeks to fine-tune policy and delivery.

Nigeria’s economy remains under pressure from rising inflation and currency instability, placing the new finance minister at the centre of urgent reforms.

While limited in scope, the reshuffle highlights Tinubu’s effort to strengthen his team as expectations for economic recovery grow.
