A drone strike has hit an aid truck in Sudan’s North Darfur state, destroying humanitarian supplies, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Sunday, without saying who was responsible.
The attack took place on Friday as the UNHCR vehicle was delivering emergency shelter kits to Tawila, an area hosting more than 700,000 displaced people.
The driver escaped unharmed, but the cargo was destroyed in the fire that followed.
UNHCR condemned the incident, warning that 1,314 families in Tawila may now be left without shelter amid severe humanitarian pressure.
The war between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and Rapid Support Forces has intensified since April 2023, with strikes increasingly killing civilians in recent months.
Since January alone, nearly 700 civilians have been killed in drone attacks by both sides, according to UN figures.
The UN says Sudan is now facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with nearly 29 million people experiencing acute food insecurity and 11 million displaced.
