Deadly clashes hit Buram as market looted in South Darfur

At least 10 people have been killed and several others wounded after violent clashes erupted in the town of Buram in South Darfur, triggering widespread looting and panic among residents, according to local sources.

Eyewitnesses told media that the violence followed a series of killings over the past week, which heightened tensions between rival armed groups and ultimately escalated into a large-scale confrontation in the town’s central market.

A local leader said the unrest began with a killing at a bus station, followed days later by the suspected murder of a shepherd inside the market. Mediation efforts between the groups failed, and tensions intensified further after another body was discovered near a trader’s home.

On Tuesday, relatives of one of the victims reportedly mobilised fighters and attacked the trader’s residence, setting it ablaze before advancing into the main market. Shops were looted amid heavy gunfire, leaving multiple civilians dead and injured.

Residents described scenes of chaos as gunmen swept through the market in the afternoon. “All the shops in the main market were looted,” said one resident, Musab Abdel Aziz, adding that at least 10 people were killed and several others wounded. Some of the injured were transported to hospital later that night.

He also said a convoy belonging to the Rapid Support Forces was ambushed while travelling from Tulus to Buram, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers.

Sources said armed groups from both sides remain deployed across the town, while intervention by local authorities and RSF units has been limited, with reports suggesting divisions in their response.

A local volunteer warned that fear is spreading among residents as violence spills into surrounding villages. He added that some of the wounded have yet to receive treatment, as families are reluctant to transport them to Nyala due to insecurity and the presence of armed groups along the route.

Community leaders have called for urgent intervention from authorities in Nyala to restore order and prevent further escalation.
