Fires broke out at the Al-Raqibat border crossing between Sudan and South Sudan, sending thick smoke across a key regional trade hub.
Blazes swept through market stalls inside the crossing, destroying shops and inflicting heavy losses on goods and property, according to local sources.
Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as traders scrambled to salvage belongings while flames spread rapidly through tightly packed structures.
Authorities said a specialised regional committee has begun assessing the damage to determine the scale of destruction and financial losses.
Initial assessments indicate severe overcrowding in the market may have fuelled the fire’s rapid spread, with similar incidents reported in the past.
The Al-Raqibat crossing is a vital supply route, providing fuel and essential goods to large parts of Darfur’s population.
Any disruption at the crossing could worsen shortages in already vulnerable communities dependent on steady trade and humanitarian aid.
No casualties have been reported so far, officials said, as investigations continue into the cause of the fire and possible safety lapses.
