Egypt raises combat readiness on border amid Sudan escalation

Egypt’s military says its forces are on high combat readiness along the southern border, as the war in Sudan escalates and regional tensions grow.

Defence Minister Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zaher held a video conference with commanders of the Southern Military Region and senior staff officials, where he reviewed operational preparedness and ongoing security challenges.

Major General Osama Samir Abdel Latif said the forces remain at the highest level of readiness for all assigned missions, despite continuous operational demands.

The defence minister stressed that securing Egypt’s borders is a “sacred and non-negotiable duty”, grounded in a doctrine that prioritises national interest above all else.

He also praised the Southern Military Region for its role in countering smuggling, illegal gold mining, and supporting civil society operations.

The meeting also focused on monitoring regional and international developments, alongside ensuring the constant technical readiness of weapons systems and military equipment.

The announcement comes as fighting intensifies in Sudan, including drone attacks on Khartoum airport, raising broader security concerns across the region.

Egypt has also reiterated its rejection of foreign interference in Sudan, stressing respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
