UN warns 880 civilians killed in Sudan drone strikes this year

At least 880 civilians were killed in drone strikes in Sudan between January and April, the UN said Monday, warning escalation.

The war between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and Rapid Support Forces have intensified across country since war began April 2023.

UN rights office said its Sudan team found drone strikes caused at least 880 deaths over January to April period this year.

Volker Turk said armed drones are now by far leading cause of civilian deaths in the conflict.

He warned expanding use of drones allows fighting to continue unabated even during rainy season lull period.

He said intensified hostilities risk spreading into central and eastern states with devastating consequences for civilians across vast areas.

War has killed tens of thousands displaced over 11 million and pushed several regions into famine conditions since 2023 war.

Turk said conflict risks entering new even deadlier phase unless urgent action is taken without delay now.

Most civilian deaths from drone strikes were recorded in Kordofan and Darfur regions earlier this year.

Rights office said strikes have hit markets and health facilities worsening hunger and limiting essential services nationwide.
