US threatens Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood with sanctions over Iran

Washington has warned Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood of possible new sanctions over ties to Iran.

The warning follows the group’s designation by the US State Department as a global terrorist organisation in March.

A US official said the group uses violence against civilians to undermine peace efforts and has received training from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The official also pointed to the designation of the Al-Bara’ bin Malik Brigade as a terrorist organisation in September 2025, citing its alleged links to Iran. Washington has described Iran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

The official said President Donald Trump’s executive order allows for a further review of related branches in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Sudan, with possible additional measures under consideration.

He also cited Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying Washington continues to reassess such groups to ensure accurate classification.
