New Ethiopian visa rules restrict entry for Egypt and Sudan

Ethiopian authorities have unveiled a sweeping update to their national entry policies in Addis Ababa.

The revised protocol grants tourist visas upon arrival at Bole International Airport to citizens of 119 selected countries.

However, Ethiopia has explicitly excluded nationals from neighboring Sudan, Eritrea, and Egypt from this simplified entry process.

To qualify, eligible travelers must possess passports valid for at least six months and arrive solely by air.

Officials clarified that the new visa exemptions do not apply to land border crossings or non-tourist visits.

This policy shift underscores the lingering political friction casting a shadow over the Horn of Africa.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed previously accused these three neighboring nations of working against Ethiopia during the Tigray conflict.

While Addis Ababa seeks to revitalize its tourism sector, geopolitical tensions continue to dictate its border security.
