Authorities aligned with the TASIS-led Peace Government in Nyala, South Darfur, have released two doctors detained earlier this month by Rapid Support Forces intelligence.
Doctors Ibrahim Tawil and Mutaz Omar were freed following the intervention of a senior TASIS official in Nyala, according to local sources cited by Darfur24.
A Nyala emergency court had reportedly sentenced both doctors last week to one year in prison and imposed fines of approximately seven million Sudanese pounds each, while granting them the right to appeal.
The sources said the doctors were released without serving the prison terms or paying the fines ordered by the court.
RSF intelligence detained the two men in early July after they issued a medical referral for the wife of an RSF defector, allowing her to seek treatment in an area controlled by the Sudanese Armed Forces.
Tawil manages the Mana’a Medical Clinic in central Nyala, while Omar works at several hospitals and health centres across the city.
Local residents told Darfur24 that a number of government hospitals and health facilities in Nyala had stopped issuing referrals for critically ill patients seeking treatment in army-controlled areas.
Medical sources said no formal directive had been issued by South Darfur’s local authorities banning such referrals. However, they said hospital administrations operating under the RSF-linked civil administration had declined to approve them.
The release of the doctors appears to have overridden the emergency court’s ruling, although authorities have not publicly explained the legal basis for the decision.
