At least 14 Sudanese refugees were injured on Thursday after members of the Sara community attacked a refugee reception centre south of Birao in the Central African Republic, according to witnesses cited by Darfur24.
The violence reportedly took place in the border town of Am Dafok and was linked to tensions following fighting last month between rebel forces and government troops.
Witnesses said some local residents accused Sudanese people living along the border of supporting rebel fighters during the earlier clashes, prompting retaliatory attacks against refugees at the reception centre.
Local police intervened to contain the violence and arrested several suspects. The injured Sudanese refugees were taken to hospital for treatment.
Seven alleged attackers who were also wounded during the clashes received medical assistance, witnesses said.
Rebel forces attacked Am Dafok last month before government troops, backed by Russian forces, recaptured the town.
The fighting led to the closure of the border with Sudan and heightened ethnic and security tensions between communities living on both sides of the frontier.
The latest incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of Sudanese refugees who fled the country’s war only to face growing insecurity in neighbouring states.
