The Sudan Founding Alliance, known as TASIS, has accused the Sudanese army of carrying out a drone strike that killed 40 civilians in the Gharra al-Zawiya area of North Darfur.
The alliance said the attack targeted a courthouse in the area, which is under the control of its rival “Government of Peace,” leaving dozens of other civilians wounded.
Ahmed Tugud Lisan, spokesperson for the alliance’s leadership body, described the strike as another serious violation against civilians living in TASIS-controlled territories.
“Targeting safe residential areas constitutes a blatant violation of humanitarian and international laws and norms,” Lisan said in a statement on Sunday. He added that the attack demonstrated what he called a disregard for civilian lives and their right to safety and dignity.
TASIS held the Sudanese army, its allied militias and what it described as the Muslim Brotherhood responsible for the attack, both legally and morally.
The alliance called for an urgent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the strike and demanded that those responsible be prosecuted.
Lisan also urged the international community, humanitarian organisations and human rights groups to take a firm position against repeated attacks on civilians and to strengthen measures aimed at protecting communities in conflict-affected areas.
The Sudanese army has not immediately commented on the allegations. The reported casualty figures and circumstances of the attack could not be independently verified.
