Several people have been killed and injured after artillery shells landed inside refugee camps along Sudan’s border with Ethiopia during clashes between the Ethiopian army and forces from the Tigray region, Sudan’s Interior Ministry said on Sunday evening.
The ministry said fighting erupted on Friday in the border area between Ethiopian federal forces and Tigrayan troops, causing projectiles to fall inside several refugee camps on the Sudanese side of the frontier.
The shelling resulted in an unspecified number of deaths and injuries, according to the ministry’s statement.
Sudan’s Commission for Refugees said it was following the developments with deep concern, warning that the continued military buildup near the border could trigger a new influx of people fleeing Ethiopia and further worsen security and humanitarian conditions in the region.
The border area serves as a major crossing and reception point for Ethiopian asylum seekers entering Sudan.
The commission urged the international and regional communities, the United Nations and humanitarian organisations to fulfil their responsibilities by helping protect refugees and supporting efforts to maintain peace and security along the border.
