Sudanese residents have recovered the bodies of 15 fighters from Ethiopia’s Tigray People’s Liberation Front from the Setit River along the Sudan-Ethiopia border following renewed clashes between Tigrayan forces and the Ethiopian army.
A medical source at Wad al-Hilu hospital, located near the Setit River, told Agence France-Presse that local residents pulled the bodies from the water. The hospital also received six wounded people on Monday, the source said.
The incident comes amid a fresh military escalation near the Sudanese-Ethiopian border, which has forced hundreds of Ethiopians to cross into Sudan in recent days to escape the fighting.
The renewed clashes around the Setit River have raised concerns over deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the border region as displaced civilians continue to arrive in Sudan seeking safety.
There was no immediate independent confirmation of the identities of the dead or the circumstances in which they entered the river.
