The United Nations’ Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, is visiting Turkey this week to support efforts aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan.
During his visit, the Finnish diplomat is expected to meet Turkish officials, youth leaders and women representatives to discuss ways to advance the peace process.
Sources say Haavisto will also hold talks with exiled figures linked to Sudan’s former government as part of efforts to reach a comprehensive ceasefire agreement.
The diplomatic initiative is being carried out in coordination with the Quintet Group to promote an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process.
International mediators have recently met Sudanese civilian leaders to discuss confidence-building measures aimed at reducing tensions and creating conditions for dialogue.
Haavisto has also remained in contact with Rapid Support Forces commander Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as part of ongoing efforts to reduce fighting.
His recent talks with Sudan’s foreign minister focused on the latest developments in the conflict and preparations for a planned visit to Khartoum.
Negotiators are also working to coordinate cross-border support to help displaced Sudanese students in Chad sit their national examinations.
The United Nations continues to urge all parties to de-escalate the conflict and engage in meaningful dialogue toward a peaceful and democratic future.
