Fresh clashes erupted in Geisan town in Sudan’s Blue Nile state, sparking panic and forcing about 2,500 people to flee their homes.
International Organization for Migration tracking teams said around 500 families escaped the sudden fighting and sought safety in nearby areas.
Some families also crossed the border into Ethiopia as violence intensified and security conditions deteriorated.
Aid officials described the situation as tense and volatile, warning that further fighting could trigger additional displacement.
Blue Nile has faced years of instability linked to an insurgency seeking greater regional autonomy since 2011.
The latest violence adds to Sudan’s wider civil war, which has raged since April 2023.
The conflict erupted after the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan Armed Forces began an unprecedented conflict, killing tens of thousands and creating a massive humanitarian crisis.
More than 13 million people have been displaced across Sudan, making the conflict one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.
