Officials have asked Meta to ensure every WhatsApp account remains linked to a verified domestic SIM card.
The ministry also ordered Meta to block WhatsApp accounts using foreign phone numbers while operating within Algeria.
Nearly 27 million registered users in Algeria use WhatsApp, making it one of the country’s most popular messaging platforms.
The move follows similar tensions in India, where regulators recently asked Meta to suspend the feature over safety concerns.
Meta says WhatsApp accounts still require a valid phone number and that the new feature includes protections against harassment and unwanted contact.
