African Union delegation visits Sudan to push for ceasefire

An African Union delegation began a two-day visit to Sudan, seeking to revive stalled peace efforts.

The AU Peace and Security Council is meeting Sudanese authorities and rival factions on a ceasefire and humanitarian access.

The visit follows more than three years of war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.

Sudanese Armed Forces has retaken much of Khartoum.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces still control large areas of Darfur.

Kordofan, linking central, western and southern Sudan, has become a fresh and bloody battleground.

Analysts say neither side has gained enough ground to prefer peace over continued fighting.

Previous initiatives, including 2023 commitments signed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, failed to halt the violence.

Analysts say the bloc lacks the financial and military leverage to force compliance from combatants.

Security analyst Kabir Amadu said the delegation must convert battlefield deadlock into diplomatic momentum quickly.
