Sudan begins registering citizens in Egypt for return

Sudan has begun registering citizens held in Egyptian prisons for return, officials said on Monday.

The Hope Committee for Voluntary Return said the move is coordinated with Egypt’s government and Sudan’s embassy in Cairo.

Committee head Mohamed Wadah appealed for funding from businessmen and international organizations to support the returns.

He said more than 80,000 Sudanese are being coordinated for return from Libya via the Salloum crossing.

In Cairo, official Abdullah Abdel-Sayed Abdullah said twelve buses departed Monday under a new phase of the initiative.

He credited Egypt’s General Intelligence Service with supporting the effort, which has already completed three train journeys.

Students remain a stated priority, with officials calling each returning student a marker of the programme’s success.

Citizens without valid documents are being directed to the Sudanese House in Cairo to complete paperwork.

Organizers say convoys will continue until all registered returnees reach their home regions inside Sudan.
