Sudanese army destroys vital bridge in Blue Nile
Rapid developments are unfolding in Sudan’s Blue Nile region amid fierce fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with the army accused of destroying a strategic bridge.
The “Peace Government” affiliated with the Sudan Founding Alliance, known as TASIS, said the Sudanese army and allied brigades destroyed a vital bridge in Qeissan locality in an attempt to slow the alliance’s advance toward Damazin, the regional capital, according to local media.
In a statement issued by Information Minister Khalid Ahmed Danaa, the Peace Government said the army and allied forces destroyed the Bakuri Bridge, which connects the Bakuri area with Anura in Qeissan locality.
It said the bridge was a major route used by thousands of residents and was important for commercial and humanitarian movement in the area.
Meanwhile, eastern parts of Qeissan are witnessing a growing wave of displacement as fighting continues between the Sudanese army and RSF-led forces.
Earlier, TASIS said its forces had captured the strategic town of Qeissan in Blue Nile, southeastern Sudan, close to the Ethiopian border, following heavy fighting with the army last Tuesday, according to Sudan Tribune.
Fighting in the region intensified in August, with the RSF announcing the capture of the border town of Kurmuk and Qeissan following a joint offensive with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North.
Sudan currently has two rival administrations: an army-aligned government based in Port Sudan, and the TASIS-affiliated Peace Government based in Nyala. TASIS includes the RSF, the SPLM-N led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, and several Darfur armed movements.
