Egyptian security forces impounded a heavy transport truck and detained 14 Sudanese nationals in Aswan after a video showing them jumping from the vehicle went viral on social media.
The footage showed the group leaving the truck near the Al-Khatara checkpoint, triggering widespread debate across Egypt.
Security forces identified the vehicle and arrested its driver, a resident of Aswan’s Daraw police district.
During questioning, the driver said he had picked up the group to transport them through Aswan to a specific destination.
He admitted dropping them on a side road before the checkpoint to help them avoid legal residency checks by authorities.
The group then walked along nearby railway tracks, intending to rejoin the truck after it passed through the checkpoint.
Police later located and detained all 14 Sudanese nationals in the Daraw jurisdiction following a search operation.
Authorities said the group admitted to the planned attempt to evade security checks, prompting legal action against those involved.
The incident has renewed debate over irregular migration routes along Egypt’s southern border as the conflict in Sudan continues to drive displacement northward.
