Suspected Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) drones struck several Rapid Support Forces (RSF) positions in Nyala on Monday, intensifying the aerial campaign against the South Darfur city that serves as the administrative capital of the Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS).
The strikes came shortly after the arrival of a cargo aircraft in the city, according to Sudan Tribune, which cited local sources. The report attributed the attacks to suspected SAF drones, though the Sudanese army had not immediately claimed responsibility.
Nyala has emerged as one of the most strategically important cities in Sudan’s war. The RSF seized the South Darfur capital in October 2023, and TASIS later designated the city as the seat of its parallel administration.
The latest attack follows an extensive RSF security deployment across Nyala earlier this month. Heavily armed units were positioned at major intersections, roads and government facilities as part of a campaign aimed at restoring security and tightening command over armed formations operating in the city.
Nyala International Airport has also become an important logistical hub during the conflict and has repeatedly been targeted by SAF air and drone strikes.
Monday’s strikes underline Nyala’s growing importance in the conflict. With TASIS establishing its political administration there and the RSF using the city as a major military and logistical centre in western Sudan, SAF has continued to apply pressure from the air even as ground fighting expands across Kordofan and Blue Nile.
There were no immediately confirmed casualty figures from Monday’s attacks.
