An 18-year-old Sudanese student survived a terrifying crocodile attack in the White Nile after entering the river to escape the intense heat, local media reported.
Shihab al-Din Issam, a secondary school student, was attacked at around midday on Tuesday, August 25, in the Hajj Musa area of Al-Qutaina locality in Sudan’s White Nile State.
Issam told Ultra Sudan that he had gone into the river to cool off when a crocodile suddenly lunged at him and clamped its jaws around his right leg.
He managed to free himself from the animal’s grip, but the crocodile attacked again and seized the same leg for a second time.
Issam continued struggling with the animal until he was able to break free again and make his way out of the water.
Four people who were nearby came to his aid after the attack and transported him to the local health centre. Medical staff later referred him to Al-Qutaina Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
His family said they learned about the incident from a passer-by and rushed to the hospital after hearing that he had been attacked.
One of Issam’s relatives told Ultra Sudan that the news caused panic among family members before they were able to reach the hospital and check on his condition.
Hajj Musa village lies south of Al-Qutaina in White Nile State and is located directly along the river. The journey from the village to Al-Qutaina takes around 40 minutes.
Communities in the area depend heavily on the White Nile for everyday activities, bringing residents into regular contact with the river and its wildlife.
