The Sudan Founding Alliance, known as Tasis, said on Friday that its forces had captured the Sarkam and Bakori military bases in Sudan’s southeastern Blue Nile region following clashes with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
In a statement, the alliance said its forces seized the two strategic positions after what it described as “decisive battles” and were continuing operations to secure the surrounding areas.
Social media accounts aligned with Tasis published footage reportedly filmed inside the bases, showing military vehicles and equipment. The location and timing of the videos could not be independently verified.
A military source acknowledged that SAF troops had left the area but described the withdrawal as a tactical move intended to allow the army to regroup and prepare a counteroffensive.
The source said SAF drones subsequently carried out heavy strikes against positions held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in Sarkam.
The latest fighting follows the RSF and SPLM-N’s capture of Kurmuk on August 11 as the allied forces seek to expand their presence across Blue Nile, which borders Ethiopia.
Clashes have intensified in the region in recent months, with the rival forces trading control of several locations. Neither side’s claims regarding the latest fighting could be independently confirmed.
The conflict has displaced thousands of civilians and deepened humanitarian and health concerns, as heavy rainfall, food shortages and limited access to shelter continue to obstruct relief operations.
