Sudanese businessman Dr Yaqoub Yahya Yaqoub Ibrahim survived an apparent assassination attempt during an event organised by the Sudanese community in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, according to witnesses.
Sources who attended the gathering said a knife-wielding man entered the venue and approached Yaqoub directly before attempting to stab him.
Yaqoub reportedly fought off the attacker but suffered an injury to his hand. The assailant fled the scene, while the businessman was taken to hospital for treatment.
Sudan’s ambassador to Indonesia, Dr Yasser Mohamed Ali, as well as the Sudanese consul and the head of the community organisation, were reportedly present at the event.
Indonesian police have opened an investigation and are working to identify and arrest the suspect and establish the motive behind the attack.
Yaqoub described the incident as a premeditated assassination attempt rather than a random assault. He alleged that unnamed parties had been targeting him and attempting to undermine his investment projects. His claims could not be independently verified.
The Sudanese community in Indonesia condemned the attack and said it was following the investigation with Indonesian authorities to ensure that the assailant and any possible accomplices were brought to justice.
