Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces have released several women journalists and activists held for more than six months following their participation in a women’s rights workshop in Nyala, South Darfur, Darfur24 reported on Monday.
Sources told the outlet that those freed included broadcaster Ishraqa Abdelrahman; Dr Manahil Mustafa al-Sanousi, director of the Al-Manhal Centre for Training and Capacity Building; radio journalist Mawahib Ibrahim; and rights activist Majda Hassan Ali.
Darfur24 could not confirm whether broadcaster Zahraa Mohamed al-Hassan, Izdihar Abdelmonem and rights activist Sara Adam had also been released.
The women were detained after attending a workshop in Nyala in February. According to the report, RSF personnel wearing civilian clothes and using military vehicles took them from their homes to undisclosed locations.
No official explanation for their detention, or information about where they were being held, was provided before their release, the outlet said.
One workshop participant said the event was organised by “Women Journalists for Peace” and “Natakallam” and brought together 25 participants.
Discussions focused on women’s rights under national laws and international conventions, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security.
