Two women were killed in separate incidents in Zalingei, the capital of Sudan’s Central Darfur state, on Tuesday, according to police sources and local residents.
A police officer in Zalingei, speaking to Darfur24 on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the media, said a 21-year-old pregnant woman was shot dead by her father in the Tayba neighbourhood in the northeast of the city.
The woman, who was in the early stages of pregnancy, was killed after refusing to leave her father’s home and move into her husband’s house following their marriage contract, the source said.
According to the police officer, her father had been pressing her to leave without holding a formal wedding ceremony. He allegedly shot her before fleeing to an unknown location.
Police opened an investigation into the killing, while the woman’s body was buried after legal procedures were completed. Her father remains at large.
In a separate incident in the Al-Hamidiyah neighbourhood in northern Zalingei, witnesses said 29-year-old Maaza Abdullah was stabbed to death by her husband on Tuesday night.
A local resident said the husband had returned home from work shortly before the attack and repeatedly stabbed his wife, killing her at the scene.
The motive for the killing was not immediately clear.
The husband surrendered to police on Wednesday, according to local residents.
