Nigerian nationals arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after being repatriated from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks, June 11, 2026

Nigeria has repatriated nearly 2,000 citizens from South Africa since June following a wave of xenophobic attacks, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

Another 105 Nigerians arrived in Lagos on Friday, bringing the total number returned under the government’s evacuation programme to 1,926.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Oluwafemi Adeniyi said the latest group included 26 men, 29 women and 50 children.

The flight was the 14th consular evacuation organised since the programme began on June 10.

Nigerian authorities said further repatriations were planned, with additional citizens in South Africa undergoing verification and clearance before being allowed to board evacuation flights.

Abuja said it was also working with South African authorities to address xenophobic violence and improve the safety of Nigerian nationals.

The government urged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain vigilant, comply with local laws and maintain contact with the Nigerian diplomatic mission in Pretoria for consular assistance.
