Schools in Nyala, South Darfur, remained closed for a second consecutive day on Thursday following the death of a teacher who was allegedly struck by a speeding military vehicle belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Teacher Mohamed Hamed was killed and several students injured on Wednesday when an RSF vehicle reportedly struck them as they crossed Jebel Marra Street, according to eyewitnesses cited by local Sudanese media.
Witnesses said the vehicle was travelling at high speed when it hit Hamed and students from Afaq Al-Mustaqbal Secondary School.
The driver allegedly initially refused to stop following the collision, triggering student protests along Congo and Al-Wahda streets in southern Nyala, where demonstrators burned tyres.
Hamed and the injured students were transported to Nyala Teaching Hospital, but the teacher died before reaching the facility.
Hamed taught Arabic at several secondary schools across the city.
The incident sparked widespread anger among students and teachers, prompting schools across Nyala to suspend classes for a second consecutive day.
It was not immediately clear whether the driver had been detained or whether RSF authorities had launched an investigation into the incident.
