US raises Kenya travel warning to Level 3

The US Department of State headquarters in Washington, DC. Washington has raised its travel advisory for Kenya to Level 3, citing security and health concerns

The United States has urged its citizens to reconsider travelling to Kenya, raising its travel advisory to Level 3 amid concerns over health risks, crime, kidnapping, terrorism and civil unrest.

In an updated advisory issued on Monday, October 19, the US State Department warned that Americans could face heightened security and health threats in the East African country, with some regions presenting particularly serious dangers.

The department raised Kenya’s travel warning from Level 2, which recommends exercising increased caution, to Level 3, which advises travellers to reconsider their plans. The State Department said the escalation was prompted by health risks.

The advisory also highlighted threats from violent crime, terrorist attacks, abductions and road accidents, warning that demonstrations and political unrest could turn violent.

Washington maintained its highest Level 4 warning, advising Americans not to travel to several areas, including Nairobi’s Eastleigh and Kibera neighbourhoods and parts of northeastern and coastal Kenya where militant activity and kidnappings remain concerns.

The State Department warned that extremist groups could target public spaces, including hotels, shopping centres, transport hubs and tourist destinations, while urging Americans who choose to visit Kenya to remain vigilant and closely monitor local security developments.
