Sudan’s Government of Peace and Unity has announced plans to strengthen its federal police force as part of efforts to restore security and public administration in El-Fasher, North Darfur.

Prime Minister Mohamed Hassan al-Taishi inaugurated the North Darfur police headquarters alongside Interior Minister Suleiman Sandal and police chief Major General Bashir Adam Issa.

Addressing police officers during the ceremony, Al-Taishi said establishing a professional federal police institution was essential to the government’s plans to build a civilian state governed by law.

He said the administration would prioritise police training, operational equipment, uniforms, salaries and other financial entitlements to improve the force’s capacity.

The prime minister also announced plans to incorporate police personnel costs into the government’s budget arrangements, describing adequate funding and professional development as necessary for effective law enforcement.

Al-Taishi stressed that police officers must protect civilians, safeguard property and enforce the law without discrimination.

He said rebuilding public confidence in law enforcement would require a fundamental change in policing practices, with greater emphasis on accountability, professional conduct and respect for citizens.

The government has identified restoring security and basic services as priorities following the capture of El-Fasher by TASIS-aligned forces in October 2025.

Al-Taishi said police personnel would play a central role in securing residential neighbourhoods, protecting public facilities and assisting families seeking to return to the city.

He called on displaced residents to consider returning as the government works to rehabilitate public institutions and improve security conditions.

Interior Minister Suleiman Sandal described the reopening of the headquarters as an important step towards rebuilding state institutions in North Darfur.

Sandal said the administration would continue efforts to rehabilitate security and service facilities, including hospitals and other public buildings.

Police chief Bashir Adam Issa welcomed the government’s commitment to supporting the force and improving its operational capabilities.

The inauguration comes alongside broader administrative reforms introduced by TASIS, including the restructuring of civilian governing institutions across Darfur and West Kordofan.
