The UK Supreme Court on Thursday announced that it will render its verdict next week on the government’s contentious proposal to deport migrants to Rwanda.
In April, the Court of Appeal in London deemed the plan unlawful, stating that Rwanda was not a safe destination. This decision dealt a significant setback to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s efforts to discourage a substantial influx of asylum seekers arriving in small boats across the Channel from France.
In October, government lawyers presented arguments at the UK’s highest court, urging it to overturn the previous ruling. The Supreme Court, with five judges, including President Robert Reed, will deliver their verdict next Wednesday, as announced by the court.
“The judgment in the above case will be handed down in the Supreme Court on Wednesday 15 November 2023 shortly after 10 a.m.,” the court said.
