Fatal accident leads Turkey to issue arrest warrant for Somali president son

A Turkish court has issued an arrest warrant for Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the son of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, in connection with a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist in Istanbul on November 30th, 2023.

The warrant alleges that M.H.S.M. was involved in a collision that resulted in the death of motorcycle courier Yunus Emre Gocer.

The accident occurred in the European district of Fatih near an exit from the Eurasia Tunnel and is currently under investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.

M.H.S.M. was initially detained as part of a preliminary investigation but was subsequently released.

Despite a travel ban imposed by Turkish authorities, he reportedly left the country on December 2nd, 2023.

An expert report requested by the prosecution concluded that M.H.S.M. was “primarily at fault” for the accident.

In his statement, M.H.S.M. claimed that the motorcyclist hit the brakes suddenly before making a right turn without signaling.

He further stated that he attempted to stop but was unable to avoid the collision.

The issuance of the arrest warrant and the ongoing investigation raise questions about M.H.S.M.’s role in the accident and his subsequent departure from Turkey.

The case is expected to receive significant attention both in Turkey and internationally.
