President William Ruto of Kenya has announced an agreement to dispatch workers to Saudi Arabia, revealing plans to send nurses and other skilled professionals to the Middle Eastern nation.
This accord, finalized on Thursday, marks a departure from past practices, where only domestic workers were sent abroad.
Expressing the development on Friday, President Ruto highlighted that this initiative will encompass 2,500 workers in the initial phase and assured a monthly salary of 200,000 Kenyan shillings ($1,300; £1,000) for these skilled laborers.
The announcement closely follows Kenya’s recent commitment to dispatch 1,500 workers to Israel, ensuring a guaranteed net monthly income of $1,500, as declared by the country’s labor ministry.
President Ruto’s proactive efforts to secure employment opportunities for Kenyans have included negotiations during his visit to Germany last month, where discussions aimed at securing 200,000 jobs for citizens took place.
Highlighting the global recognition of Kenyans for their diligent work ethic, Mr. Ruto reiterated his commitment to exploring international employment avenues for Kenyans.
He emphasized the importance of Kenyans finding work abroad to alleviate the country’s unemployment challenges while also contributing to Kenya’s foreign exchange reserves, which have faced significant strain, leading to a decline in the value of the Kenyan shilling in recent months.
