
After being granted admission three weeks ago, Somalia has now officially become a member of the East African Community (EAC).
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sealed the country’s full membership into the bloc by signing the treaty during a ceremony led by the current EAC chair, South Sudan President Salva Kiir, held in Uganda on Friday.
The formal inclusion of Somalia on 24th November marks its entry as the eighth member state, joining Burundi, DR Congo, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda within the EAC.
President Mohamud expressed his optimism during the ceremony, stating that Somalia’s integration into the bloc symbolizes “beacon of hope for a future filled with possibilities”
He further emphasized his country’s commitment to contributing to the regional progress and development within the East African region.
