27 dead, dozens rescued as two migrant boats sink off Tunisia

Tunisia’s coast guard recovered the bodies of 27 African migrants after two boats sank in the Mediterranean while attempting to cross from the city of Sfax, a known departure point for migrants, the national guard reported on Thursday.

The tragic incident occurred off the coast of Sfax, where last month, Tunisia’s coast guard also recovered the bodies of about 30 migrants in separate boat sinking incidents while en route to Europe.

On Thursday, the coast guard managed to rescue 87 individuals from the two sunken boats. Tunisia is currently facing an unprecedented migration crisis, with the country now surpassing Libya as the primary departure point for both Tunisians and migrants from across Africa seeking to reach Europe.
