Africa CDC links DR Congo illness to malaria

A mysterious illness claiming dozens of lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is likely malaria, according to Africa CDC.

The disease, first detected in October, has emerged in Panzi, about 700 kilometers southeast of the capital, Kinshasa.

Africa CDC chief Ngashi Ngongo revealed this during an online briefing, citing malnutrition as a major contributing factor.

Ngongo added that a viral hemorrhagic condition alongside malaria cannot yet be ruled out as investigations continue.

So far, 37 deaths have been recorded in local health facilities from nearly 600 reported cases, official data reveals.

An additional 44 deaths at the community level are under investigation, deepening concerns over the outbreak’s severity.

The remote region lacks accessible roads, proper health infrastructure, drinking water, and essential medicines, officials noted.

Panzi’s malnutrition rate, at a staggering 61%, further worsens the region’s vulnerability to health crises, authorities said.
