A tragic boat accident off the coast of Yemen has claimed the lives of 20 Ethiopian migrants.
The vessel, carrying 35 Ethiopian migrants and two Yemeni crew members, capsized near Al-Hajjajah in Ta’iz Governorate on January 18th.
While 17 people, including 15 Ethiopian men and the two Yemeni crew members, survived, 20 Ethiopian migrants, including nine women, tragically lost their lives.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) attributed the incident to strong seasonal winds.
This incident underscores the perilous journey faced by migrants seeking a better life and highlights the urgent need for international cooperation to address the root causes of irregular migration and ensure the protection of migrants.
The IOM has documented over 3,400 deaths and disappearances along the Eastern Route since 2014, emphasizing the urgent need for concerted efforts to prevent such tragedies.
