Four Nigerian soldiers were killed on Saturday when Boko Haram militants launched a brutal assault on a military base in Yobe State.
The attack targeted the 27 Task Force Brigade stationed in Buni Yadi, a town within Gujba Local Government Area. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the insurgents stormed the base in large numbers, firing indiscriminately.
A military source, speaking anonymously, said the soldiers were outnumbered and unprepared for the scale of the onslaught. “We were caught off guard and outnumbered,” the source admitted. “We lost four of our men, just as they (the terrorists) also recorded casualties.”
The fierce firefight raged for hours, leaving not only casualties but also significant damage to operational equipment, according to the source.
Though the Nigerian Army acknowledged the attack through official social media channels, it withheld further details about the incident or possible reinforcements.
This latest ambush comes barely a day after the North East Governors Forum, convened in Yobe, announced a new multidimensional strategy to combat insurgency.
Despite ongoing military efforts and regional collaboration, Boko Haram’s continued aggression underscores the persistent instability in Nigeria’s northeastern region.
The attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents that have plagued northern Nigeria, raising renewed questions about national security preparedness.
