China pushes for ‘peaceful development’ in Africa’s Horn

China has reiterated its commitment to supporting peace and development in the Horn of Africa region.

During the second Horn of Africa Peace Conference held in Beijing on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasized China’s willingness to collaborate with regional countries on the “Initiative of Peaceful Development in the Horn of Africa.”

This initiative, launched in early 2022, focuses on three key areas: security, development, and governance.

Foreign Ministry officials, including Vice Minister Chen Xiaodong and Special Envoy Xue Bing, participated in the conference alongside representatives from Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.

Chen highlighted China’s ongoing efforts to support regional peace and development through concrete actions aligned with the initiative’s goals.

He expressed China’s desire to be a long-term partner for Horn of Africa nations, guided by the principles of the Global Security Initiative.

This initiative aims to establish a “comprehensive security” framework that promotes a broad vision of peace.

Both China and the attending African nations pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation across five key areas: peace, security, development, cooperation, and governance.

This collaboration aims to achieve tangible results that benefit the people of all participating countries.

The Horn of Africa Peace Conference serves as a platform for furthering China’s engagement in the region.

The first conference took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in June 2022. With this renewed commitment and a focus on collaborative action, China seeks to contribute to a future of peace, development, and shared prosperity for the Horn of Africa.
