Comoros voters cast ballots in second round of national elections

Comoros voters cast ballots Sunday in the second round of parliamentary elections amid an opposition boycott.

Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. and will close at 4 p.m. (0500-1300 GMT), with results expected later this week.

The Supreme Court approved 100 candidates for the 33-seat parliament, but the opposition party Juwa called the election a “farce.”

The ruling party secured 28 seats in the first round, held on Jan. 12, which Juwa boycotted over transparency concerns.

President Azali Assoumani, in power since 2016, extended his rule through a 2018 referendum removing term limits.
