Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced on Monday that it has received a formal request from the Democratic Republic of the Congo for mpox vaccines and syringes produced in Japan.

This request follows the recent declaration by the World Health Organization, which identified mpox as a global public health emergency for the second time in two years. The decision comes in response to a rapidly spreading new variant of the virus across Africa.

The Japanese health ministry is working closely with the WHO and other international partners to expedite the delivery of these critical supplies.

Japan-based KM Biologics is one of the two key producers of widely used mpox vaccines. The other vaccine, known as Jynneos, is manufactured by Denmark’s Bavarian Nordic (BAVA.CO).
