Deadly prison break in Chad leaves three dead and several injured

Over 100 inmates staged a deadly prison break in Chad, resulting in three fatalities and the injury of a visiting state governor, officials informed AFP on Saturday.

The escape unfolded late Friday at a high-security penitentiary near Mongo.

An uprising allowed prisoners to break into the manager’s office and seize weapons, according to a local official.

A shootout erupted with guards coinciding with the governor’s arrival at the facility.

The governor sustained injuries during the exchange of fire. While one official reported approximately 100 escaped inmates, another placed the figure at 132.

The prisoners’ revolt was reportedly triggered by complaints regarding insufficient food provisions.

Chad’s Justice Minister stated he would travel to the region to provide further details.
