Egypt pushes for three slots per top nation in CAF tournaments

The blueprint of African club football may soon expand as a decisive verdict looms on the continent’s premier tournaments.

Journalist Ahmed Shobeir revealed that the Confederation of African Football is poised to finalize the future structure of its club competitions.

Egyptian Football Association President Hani Abu Rida spearheaded the movement by submitting a formal expansion request to the governing body.

The ambitious proposal seeks to increase the tournament slots to three for top nations in both continental championships next season.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe gave initial approval to the plan following several private discussions with the Egyptian football chief.

However, the final verdict rests with the CAF Executive Committee, which must formally ratify any changes to the tournament.

The executive committee will convene a critical meeting less than ten days before the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup.

Committee members remain deeply divided on whether to embrace this sweeping expansion or maintain the traditional, long-standing competition format.

While the voting majority hangs in the balance, Motsepe’s significant leadership influence could tilt the scales toward structural change.

Currently, four Egyptian powerhouses are locked into the upcoming campaign across both prestigious African football tournaments.

Zamalek and Pyramids are slated for the Champions League, while Al-Ahly and Ceramica Cleopatra will contest the Confederation Cup.
