At least eight people were killed and 37 injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in central Uganda on Monday.
The accident happened when the speeding bus driver lost control while overtaking, crashing into an oncoming truck carrying maize flour.
The bus veered into the path of the truck, leading to the tragic crash.
Regional Police Commander Twaha Kasirye said the driver was rushing to meet a schedule in Kampala, contributing to the accident due to excessive speed.
Police are investigating the crash. The driver’s high speed and reckless overtaking are believed to be the primary causes of this fatal incident, as reported by local authorities.
Uganda has seen a 30% rise in road fatalities over the past year, with 4,179 deaths recorded.
The surge in accidents has prompted the government to introduce stricter road safety measures to curb the rising death toll.
New measures include increasing speeding fines from $55 to $550 and setting new speed limits: 100 km/h on highways and 80 km/h on paved or gravel roads.
These changes are part of the Traffic and Road Safety (Amendment) Bill 2023.
