Ethiopian, Somali intel chiefs meet to strengthen ties

Ethiopian intelligence chief Redwan Hussien met with his Somali counterpart Abdullahi Mohamed Ali on Tuesday to discuss enhancing security cooperation and reaffirming commitments outlined in the Ankara Declaration.

The meeting, held in the Ethiopian capital, aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and address shared security challenges, including terrorism, regional instability, and potential foreign interference.

“As a follow-up to the Ankara Declaration, we both vowed to move forward and keep detractors from near and afar who are bent on derailment at bay,” Hussien stated on X.

The meeting coincided with the arrival of a Somali delegation led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Omar, further solidifying the commitment to the Ankara Declaration.

Signed on December 12, the Ankara Declaration, brokered by Turkey, marked a significant turning point in relations between Ethiopia and Somalia, which had recently faced tensions.

The agreement reaffirmed both countries’ respect for each other’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.
