Fears of new Libya conflict as forces brace for attack

Libya’s internationally recognized government has heightened military alertness, anticipating a potential attack near the borders of Tunisia and Algeria.

Forces loyal to Libya’s eastern rival administration are suspected.

Deputy Chief of Staff Salahuddin al-Namroush has directed army units to remain vigilant and ready to counter any threat.

This was revealed by a military source on the Libya al-Ahrar TV channel.

Libya, rich in energy resources, has faced chaos since the 2011 NATO-backed overthrow of dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

The country is divided between the UN-backed Tripoli government and an eastern faction.

The rival eastern faction, led by Khalifa Haftar, previously attempted to capture Tripoli from 2019 to 2020, with support from the UAE, Egypt, Russia, and some Western nations but failed to succeed.

Libya al-Ahrar reported Haftar’s forces moving toward southwest Libya, a region controlled by Tripoli authorities.

Forces led by Saddam Haftar are conducting patrols to secure the strategic border areas.
