Niamey, Niger’s capital, faces severe isolation due to floodwaters from recent heavy rains in the Sahel.
The main routes out of the city, home to about 1.5 million people, are submerged.
The flooding has impacted approximately 11,500 residents.
Over the past three months, the rains have caused 217 deaths and affected more than 350,000 people, according to military-led authorities.
Canoes have replaced buses and delivery vans as the primary mode of transport.
Habiboulaye Abdoulaye, a local resident, explains that reaching other parts of Niger now requires a canoe and a vehicle on the opposite shore.
Transport companies have halted services, and desperate drivers like Ali Adamou have had their trucks swallowed by floodwaters.
Ali recounted nearly dying when a minibus sank.
Efforts are underway to address the crisis, with French construction group Sogea-Satom working to reopen National Route 1.
Excavators and military personnel are reinforcing dykes along the Niger River to prevent further damage.
