Offshore hackers, identified as “Waste,” stole 62 billion Ugandan shillings ($16.8 million) from the Bank of Uganda, the New Vision reported.
The Southeast Asia-based group allegedly accessed the bank’s IT systems and transferred funds, with some routed to Japan. While over half the amount has been recovered, President Museveni has launched an investigation.
The Daily Monitor suggested insider collusion might be involved. Cyber thefts are not uncommon in Uganda, though banks often avoid public acknowledgment to maintain customer confidence.
