A tragic landslide at Kampala’s landfill has claimed eight lives, city officials confirmed.
The disaster struck late Friday after intense rain, burying nearby homes.
The Ugandan media reported the incident, emphasizing the urgent situation.
The Kampala Capital City Authority stated that government and Red Cross teams are actively searching the site.
They’ve rescued 14 individuals so far, and operations continue to locate more survivors amid the debris.
In a somber update, authorities announced on X that the death toll includes six adults and two children.
“Rescue efforts persist as we strive to find more survivors,” the authority reported.
Kiteezi, the landfill site, has served as Kampala’s primary dump for decades.
Residents have long voiced concerns about hazardous waste polluting the environment and the potential threat it poses to local communities.
